Research Requests

Many of the items at the CCHM Research Library are unique and some are quite fragile and require special handling. We take special precautions to ensure that our collections will be available to many generations of users. All materials must stay in the main Research Library area at all times. While most stacks are open and may be browsed independently, some materials, such as original photographs and maps, must be requested of the library staff.

To determine if our collections contain any materials (or objects in the case of the museum collections outside the Research Library) relevant to your research, or to arrange a visit to view specific materials, objects and/or related documentation, please contact Visitor Services at 360-993-5679 and ask for Kas Anderson, Visitor Services Manager, or e-mail her at kas@cchmuseum.org. Generally, the submittal of a “Collection Access Request” (please see link below) will be required along with a minimum of two weeks notice for our follow-up.

“Distance research” requests can be made and will be evaluated given the limitations of the materials available in the Research Library as well as the expertise of staff and time available. Such requests are typically made by researchers who cannot come to the museum to do their own research. Although such research requests may be made by telephone, it is preferred that such requests be made in writing via mail, fax, or e-mail. Please use the “Research Request” form given on the link below. Be as specific as you can about what you want to find. For instance, include names, dates, and locations. If you need a particular type of format such as manuscripts, maps, or photographs, be sure to note it.

The Research Library charges a fee for research inquiries that require a response by phone, e-mail, fax, or mail, and for walk-in visitors whose research requests will involve more than nominal assistance. Examples of services that may require a fee include locating, retrieving, and photocopying documents and photographs. Generally, staff members cannot undertake extensive research, but will, within reasonable limits, provide information about relevant research library holdings. A minimum turn-around time of two weeks on research requests should be anticipated. Payment in advance via check or credit card is usually required.

Research assistance is $45.00 per hour with a minimum charge of one hour. The fees may be waived for inquiries requiring only nominal assistance.
